Newborn Photography Session FAQ – What to Expect

Planning a newborn photoshoot can feel overwhelming, but the session itself is calm, flexible, and designed around your baby’s needs. Here’s everything you need to know about what happens during the shoot and how to prepare.
1. What happens during a newborn session?
A newborn session is slow, gentle, and completely baby-led. Sessions usually last around 2–3 hours, allowing time for feeding, cuddles, settling, and changing. There is no rush — everything is done at your baby’s pace to create natural, timeless newborn photos.aby’s pace.
2. What if my baby won’t settle or pose?
No worries! Babies are unpredictable, and we follow your baby’s rhythm. Some settle quickly, while others take a little more time. We take breaks, gently soothe, and adjust poses as needed — and after years of experience (and a few tried-and-tested tricks 😉), many parents joke that I’m a bit of a baby whisperer. Often, the sweetest images happen once your baby is fully relaxed.
3. What if my baby pees or poos during the session?
This happens! All babies do it, and it’s completely normal. We’re prepared with blankets, wraps, and wipes, so it’s easy to clean up and continue the session without stress.
4. What if parents are tired?
Newborn life is tiring — you don’t need to “perform” or be perfect. You’re welcome to sit back, relax, have a drink, or simply enjoy watching your baby. Calm, relaxed parents help create a calm environment for your newborn.
5. Can my baby be photographed asleep or awake?
Yes! Some of the most serene shots are taken while your baby is asleep, but we can also capture tiny smiles, yawns, and curious eyes when awake. We work with whatever mood your baby is in.
6. Do you provide props and outfits?
Yes! We have a wide range of blankets, wraps, outfits, and props. You don’t need to bring anything, though you’re welcome to bring a special keepsake or toy if you want it included.
7. Can siblings and parents join the photos?
Absolutely! We can include parents, siblings, and even pets. Family portraits are gentle, natural, and designed with your newborn’s safety in mind.
8. How do you handle feeding or changing during the session?
Feeding and changing are part of the process. We schedule breaks whenever your baby needs them, so the session remains calm and relaxed for everyone.
9. How can I prepare my baby for the session?
Feed and change your baby beforehand. A slightly sleepy, full baby often settles faster, making posing easier. Bring essentials like nappies, wipes, and a spare outfit. You can try to keep baby awake about 30-60 mins before the session but don’t worry if it’s not possible.
10. What should parents do before the session?
- Wear neutral, comfortable clothing (white, beige, soft tones work best)
- Avoid busy patterns or logos
- Allow extra time so you’re not rushing
- Come with a relaxed mindset — everything is baby-led
You don’t need to bring outfits or props for baby — everything is provided.
12. Will my baby be safe during the session?
Absolutely. Our studio is heated, clean, and designed for newborns. All poses are supported and safe, and we only use professional props.
13. What if my baby cries?
Crying is completely normal for newborns. If your baby needs feeding, cuddling, or extra comfort, we pause. Often, once babies feel settled and secure, they relax naturally. Your baby’s comfort always comes first.
14. Can we include special items in the photos?
Yes! Many parents bring family heirlooms, toys, or blankets. These personal touches make the photos even more meaningful.
15. What if I’m worried my baby won’t cooperate at all?
Don’t worry—every baby is different. We’re experienced in handling all moods and personalities, and the session is flexible so we capture beautiful images no matter what.
