Behind the Scenes of a Newborn Photoshoot in My Preston Studio
Behind the Scenes of a Newborn Photoshoot in My Preston Studio
So, you’re thinking about booking a newborn photography session for your little one.
Maybe you’ve already looked at styles, prices, and photographers in and around Preston, Lancashire — or perhaps you’ve only just discovered newborn photography and are curious what it’s all about.
Either way, one thing is certain: this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Your baby will never be this tiny again, and the photos we create together will be the ones you treasure for years to come.
If you’re wondering what really happens during a newborn session (and why parents call me the baby whisperer), let me take you behind the scenes.

When Should You Book a Newborn Session?
Discover newborn photoshoot in Preston
The best time for newborn photography is within the first two weeks of your baby’s life. At this stage, little ones are still very sleepy and flexible, which makes it easier to capture those adorable curled-up poses.
That said, I also photograph babies up to six weeks old, so don’t worry if you’ve missed the “ideal” window — it’s never too late to create beautiful memories.
Because my diary fills quickly, I always recommend parents secure their session after the 20-week scan. Once your baby arrives, you simply get in touch to arrange the exact date.
Inside the Studio: Warm, Calm & Relaxing
I know the idea of leaving the house so soon after giving birth can feel overwhelming, but my Preston photography studio is designed to make things easy for you.
From the moment you arrive, my goal is to help you feel comfortable and welcome. The studio is warm, cosy, and calm — a little haven away from the outside world. I’ve carefully created the space so it feels like an extension of home: safe, nurturing, and completely baby-friendly.
Sessions usually last around 2–3 hours, but there’s no pressure or rushing. We go at your baby’s pace, taking breaks whenever needed. You’ll find a comfy sofa, refreshments, and space to sit back and relax while I work.
I have a wide collection of props, wraps, and tiny outfits in many colours and styles. Some parents choose soft neutrals for a timeless look, while others love something more colourful — the choice is yours, and we’ll design your session around what feels right for your family.

How the Session Flows
Before we even start photographing, I like to have a little chat with you. I’ll ask about your preferences, favourite colours, any props you love, and the kind of images you’d like. This helps me personalise the session so it reflects your family’s style and creates portraits you’ll truly treasure.
Once baby has had a good feed and drifts into a cosy sleep, we usually start with those sweet, curled-up poses you’ve seen in my portfolio. I’ll gently wrap your little one, keep them snug, and begin capturing their tiny details from different angles and perspectives.
Throughout the session, I’m always watching for cues — a stretch, a wiggle, a change in breathing — so I can adapt and keep your baby safe, happy, and comfortable. If they need extra cuddles, a top-up feed, or a little break, we pause. This is what’s known as a baby-led session: everything revolves around your baby’s needs.
Every child is unique, and with a little patience, white noise, wrapping, and plenty of love, they soon settle. Over the years I’ve never met a baby I couldn’t soothe, which is why many families fondly call me the baby whisperer.
Parents & Siblings: A Family Story
Of course, your newborn session isn’t just about your baby — it’s about your whole family.
If you’d like to be included in the photos (and I always encourage it), I’ll gently guide you into natural, flattering poses that highlight the love between you and your little one. Even the simplest gestures — your hands holding theirs, a kiss on the forehead, or a quiet cuddle — can create some of the most powerful and emotional images.
Siblings are always welcome too, and these moments often turn into treasured memories full of giggles, hugs, and pure connection.

The Big Reveal: Your Viewing Appointment
About one to two weeks after your session, you’ll return to the studio for your gallery viewing. This is one of my favourite parts of the process — seeing parents’ reactions when their images are shown in a personalised slideshow is always so special.
You’ll also have the chance to see my product range in person. From luxury albums to framed wall art, the beautiful birch sphere, timeless canvas prints, and digital collections, there’s something for every style of home. Having the products in front of you means you can feel the quality and imagine how they’ll look in your own space.
Together, we’ll choose the perfect way to preserve your baby’s story — something that will last for generations.
